FROM SMALL, BEGINNER-FRIENDLY WAVES TO HEAVY BARRELLING WAVES

The Mentawai Islands are renowned worldwide as a surfer’s paradise, and the reason for that is simple: the incredible abundance and variety of waves, unmatched anywhere else on Earth. There are left-handers and right-handers, rippable walls and perfect barrels, easy waves for beginners, challenging waves for experts, and everything in between.
This is without doubt one of the world’s foremost surfing destinations, with a range of waves that is practically infinite.

BOATS AND SURF GUIDES TO FIND THE BEST WAVES

The conditions for surfing are in constant flux, changing in accordance with the wind, tide, and size and direction of the swell. Thanks to our intimate knowledge of the surrounding area, we know where the waves are likely to be best at any given moment. Once we’ve analysed the conditions, we make the most of the boats at our disposal and take our guests to the best waves.
Awera Resort has a fleet of three boats — two made of wood, one of metal.

Boat service included
Use of the boats carries no additional cost. Surfers staying at the resort can use this service as many times as they wish, checking out different spots every day.
Secret spots just for our guests
We also have a few secret spots up our sleeve, which our guides will be more than happy to take you to when conditions oblige.
TAKE YOUR SURFING TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Our expert instructors use a range of teaching methods to help you improve your surfing, from offering support and guidance in the water when you’re getting started, to filming your session and analysing the footage with you in the evening over a drink.

Four surfers in Mentawai waves
Beginners
1
Step 1. Get to know the ocean and the waves, and learn how to negotiate them safely.
First and foremost, you need to know about safety in the water, which means understanding how the ocean works and learning about the local conditions.
2
Step 2. Hit the waves with our help.
We’ll show you where to position yourself in relation to the wave, how to paddle, how to read the line-up, and, finally, how to stand up.
3
Step 3. Learn to be independent in the water.
You’re ready to tackle the waves by yourself, starting in the white water — i.e. on waves that have already broken — and gradually progressing to more challenging waves.
4
Step 4. You’re no longer a novice.
Now we can show you how to paddle out to the peak, duck-dive under oncoming waves, and negotiate more critical take-offs.
Intermediates
The main aim of our intermediate lessons is to help you gain confidence in the water and refine your technique. We assess the level of each individual surfer and pinpoint the areas they could improve on — generating speed, for instance, or perfecting their take-off, or transitioning up and down the wave. We’ll work on these techniques in smaller waves, and then put them into practice in some more sizeable surf.
Advanced
GUIDED SURF TRIPS
More experienced surfers will love our guided surf trips. Our surf guide knows all the ins and outs of the area, and will give you the best possible chance of scoring perfect waves. Every spot is different, so we’ll give you specific advice on how to go about surfing each of the many nearby waves.
VIDEO COACHING
Every wave you surf will be filmed by our guide. In the evening, we’ll have a drink and a chat back at the camp, analysing each wave together.
