To get to the Mentawai Islands, there is only one point of entry: the airport in the city of Padang.
Once you’re there, our staff will pick you up and take you to your hotel for the night.
The day after you arrive at the airport we’ll take you from your hotel to the city’s port, where the Fast Ferry leaves for the Mentawai Islands, three hours’ journey away.
The ferry departs at 7am on Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays and 6am on Mondays. We always advise our guests to arrive in Padang one day before the ferry departs.
Once in Tua Pejat, guests will be picked up by our staff and transferred via speed boat to the Resort, which is a ten-minute journey away.
There is no major issue in the Islands with a specific illness or disease. However, we advise our guests to consult their doctor or travel clinic in their own country.
The Mentawai Islands are situated in an area subject to seismic activity. In the event of an earthquake and possible tsunami, there is elevated terrain within a few minutes of the Resort, easily accessed via the evacuation route (you will be provided with a map of the route). We also have in place a warning system that alerts us immediately to potential disasters. In the capital of Tua Pejat they are fully prepared to deal with such situations, equipped as they are with satellite alarms, medical equipment, and satellite phones to communicate with the navy and the government.
We have satellite phones located at various points around the resort, should we need to make an urgent call.
We would strongly advise all our guests to take out travel medical insurance. You can take out a customised policy to meet all your travel needs through Awera Resort itself.
We are directly and actively involved with local government, helping to establish new regulations regarding environmental protection.
Awera Resort is committed to recycling 100% of our waste. With this aim in mind we have developed a recycling protocol whereby different materials can be separated out and classified accordingly, then deposited at the appropriate waste recovery plant.
We have also installed a system for collecting rainwater and we encourage the use of biodegradable products.
In a bid to create wealth in the region we are committed to hiring local people from the island, particularly those who are most in need, such as single mothers.
We are likewise committed to supporting the local school with additional funds to ensure a long-lasting and productive partnership with the local community. We want all children in the surrounding area to have access to decent basic education.
Awera Resort is a long-term project that seeks to become a creator of opportunities for the islands’ inhabitants.
